HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - Orlando Bloom, best known for playing Legolas the Elf in "Lord of the Rings," is adding another fantasy role to his resume, that of a pirate.

Bloom has signed on to co-star with Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush in Walt Disney's "Pirate of the Caribbean," according to Variety. Gore Verbinski ("The Mexican") will direct the film, which is inspired by the Disney theme park ride and may be a candidate for future sequels.

The British actor will play the role of Will Turner, who teams up with the swashbuckling Capt. Jack Sparrow (Depp) to rescue the governor's daughter when she is kidnapped by pirates. Tom Wilkinson ("In the Bedroom") is in talks to play the governor.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" is slated to start production on Oct. 9, 2002.
