Orlando Bloom Interview
August 14, 2003
Break Out (Holland)
Typed and translated by Esther

Finally: We got the chance to interview Orlando Bloom while he was in London. Of course, we came. We did pick the wrong day, according to himself. He's got a hangover from his after-party of Pirates of the Caribbean, but despite that, he still looks great. His long, black hair hangs in tails for his dark, brown eyes, his baggy clothes look really cool and the rings around his fingers shine. He takes a swallow of water and says: 'All right, I'm ready. What do you want to know?'

Always wanted to play a pirate?

- Of course! That's the dream of every little boy right? I used the Sunday-afternoons for watching pirate movies of Errol Flynn, the ultimate pirate-actor of all times. It looked awesome to me to put an eye patch on and go crossing swords and entering ships...

How did you get the role of blacksmith Will Turner?

- It was by coincidence, actually. At the after-party of my last movie, Ned Kelly (with Heath Ledger), I got talking with Geoffrey Rush (plays captain Barbossa). I asked him what he was going to do after Ned Kelly, and then he told me about Pirates of the Caribbean. He told me that Johnny Depp was going to be in it too, and that they still were searching someone for the role of Will Turner. 'Where do I sign?' I screamed and a little time after that I was on board.

Did you do all the stunts in Pirates by yourself?

- Not everything, because the insurance company didn't want so. But the scenes I didn't do, were taken over by a brilliant stunt double.

In 1998 you broke your back by falling out of a window. Don't you think it's dangerous playing all those action roles?

- No, I don't. I trained really hard for this movie to get in shape and in form. But the doctor that operated me at the time, told me later that my back was cured. But I got the advice to eat a lot of steak.

But you're a vegetarian!

- That's right. My back may be cured, but I kept an annoying pain. When we shot Lord of the Rings, I went to an expert. He told me that one steak a week would lighten the pain. It is a complicated medical story, but it does work! Since then, my pain is gone.

Did you have to learn new skills for Pirates?

- Yes, crossing swords. I had some experience with Lord of the Rings, but sword fighting is something else as shooting with a bow and arrow. The fencing is really tough, man!

But you had a good teacher, of course...

- Yes, and he was not just anyone: I had fence lessons of Bob Anderson. He used to be the trainer of... pirate actor Errol Flynn! In the pirate adventure The Master of Ballantrae Bob even got to be Errol's stunt double. Pretty cool hah?

What do you remember most of filming Pirates?

- The difficult scenes on the ships. Because as opposed to all the special effects in Lord of the Rings, the pirate ships were all really built. But the hard wind, high waves and thunderclouds made the shoots really difficult. And one time director Gore Verbinski got really mad. He just shot a really tough scene, but while looking it back, he saw an oiler on the background. He got so mad!

Your new project is also one to look forward to: Troy.

- Troy is gonna be so cool! It is going to be some sort of Gladiator spectacle about Greece heroes, and we're shooting it on Malta and in Mexico now. I am playing Paris, the prince of Troy, that in 1193 before Christ a girl named Helena steals from her husband, the Greece lord Melenaus. The Greek under the guidance of Achilles declare war to the Trojans, which are under guidance of Prince Hector.

And no one less then Brad Pitt is playing Achilles!

- Cool hah? By the way, the whole cast is great, because Hulk-actor Eric Bana plays Hector. But what happened to Brad and me, was really stupid. Before the shoots we had a 'castdiner'. After that Brad and I walked out of the restaurant, and what happened then…

Tell us!

- The whole street was full of cheering and screaming people! I had never seen something like that! Of course, that it happens at a premier… But in a little street in Malta you don't expect that.

What do you think of all this attention?

- It is nice, intimidating en overwhelming at the same time. But it can also get annoying. Because I want to be an actor, not a sexsymbol. The good part is that I get a lot of sweet fanmail. Last time someone wrote me: Orli, you're not only a sexsymbol, but also a cute guy. I really thought that was sweet.

What do you do with all the fanmail?

- When I have the time, I read it. But it is getting so much, I have a whole team handling my mail. Every week I go there for a few hours to sign photos, cards and goodies. I would rather handle them all by myself, but then I would have to clone myself, and I don't like the sound of that idea. Though, some girls would think different about that, haha!
